Families

I know that families are important and it makes sense that we were sent here to a family, to be each others support, to learn and grow from each other. If we were meant to do it alone we would have been sent here each individually. We would have been selfish and self centered, not caring about others because it would be all we knew,  to fend for ourselves. Family life can be a challenge, so many different personalities living together, trying to get along. But we must be there for each other, we must grow together, and lift one another up. We must seek for the good and not focus on the bad. After all each of us is fighting a battle, each of us has problems. We are here for a reason, not just for ourselves but to help others along this journey.

This is the second talk for President Uchtdorf that has talked about not holding grudges and making peace with people. That is two times in 6 months, it must be important and something that we need to hear.

We Follow Jesus Christ

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I believe in Christ. I believe he lives. I believe he knows each of us so very personally and cares so deeply. I believe in Christ, do I follow Him? How often do we exam ourselves and ask if we are trying each day to follow in His footsteps? The 13th article of faith is one I have memorized and to me it describes our how our Savior lived.

"We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous and in doing good to all men. Indeed we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul; We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things and we hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely or of good report or praiseworthy we seek after these things."

“[Jesus Christ] is the center of all that we do, all that we hope to be,” Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles says. “All of our dreams and future aspirations are centered in our belief in Jesus Christ and our willingness to know what His teachings are and to strive to keep His commandments.”

Quotes from the Presidents of the Church

In my patriarchal blessing it tells me to study how the Lord taught his children in the past and to also study the words of the Prophets. On LDS.org there is a church history link containing information about all of the prophets and there is a section of quotes under each one. I read through them and copied the ones that stood out to me.

“The spirit must be freed from tethers so strong and feelings never put to rest, so that the lift of life may give buoyancy to the soul. In many families, there are hurt feelings and a reluctance to forgive. It doesn’t really matter what the issue was. It cannot and should not be left to injure. Blame keeps wounds open. Only forgiveness heals. George Herbert, an early 17th-century poet, wrote these lines: ‘He that cannot forgive others breaks the bridge over which he himself must pass if he would ever reach heaven, for everyone has need of forgiveness.’” - Thomas S. Monson

“As parents, we should remember that our lives may be the book from the family library which the children most treasure. Are our examples worthy of emulation? Do we live in such a way that a son or a daughter may say, ‘I want to follow my dad,’ or ‘I want to be like my mother’? Unlike the book on the library shelf, the covers of which shield its contents, our lives cannot be closed. Parents, we truly are an open book in the library of learning of our homes.” - Thomas S. Monson

“It is in the home that we form our attitudes, our deeply held beliefs. It is in the home that hope is fostered or destroyed. Our homes are to be more than sanctuaries; they should also be places where God’s Spirit can dwell, where the storm stops at the door, where love reigns and peace dwells.” - Thomas S. Monson

“Under the plan of heaven, the husband and the wife walk side by side as companions, neither one ahead of the other, but a daughter of God and a son of God walking side by side. Let your families be families of love and peace and happiness. Gather your children around you and have your family home evenings, teach your children the ways of the Lord, read to them from the scriptures, and let them come to know the great truths of the eternal gospel as set forth in these words of the Almighty.” - Gordon B. Hinckley

“Let us be a temple-attending people. Attend the temple as frequently as personal circumstances allow. Keep a picture of a temple in your home that your children may see it. Teach them about the purposes of the House of the Lord. Have them plan from their earliest years to go there and to remain worthy of that blessing.” - Howard W. Hunter

“You should express regularly to your wife and children your reverence and respect for her. Indeed, one of the greatest things a father can do for his children is to love their mother.” - Howard W. Hunter

“The great task of life is to learn the will of the Lord and then do it.” - Ezra Taft Benson

“Pride is a sin that can readily be seen in others but is rarely admitted in ourselves.” - Ezra Taft Benson

“Working toward perfection is not a one time decision but a process to be pursued throughout one's lifetime.” - Spencer W. Kimball

“There is no doubt that the life one leads, and the thoughts one thinks are registered plainly in his face.” - Spencer W. Kimball

“The Lord's way builds individual self esteem and develops and heals the dignity of the individual, whereas the world's way depresses the individual's view of himself and causes deep resentment.” - Spencer W. Kimball

“God grant that each of us here today may so live that all among us, and with us, may see, not us, but that which is divine and comes from God. With that vision of what those who have lost their way may become, my prayer is that they may receive strength and resolution to climb higher and higher and upward and onward to that great goal of eternal life and also that I may do my part in seeking to show by example, as well as by precept, that which will be the best of which I am capable of doing.” - Harold B. Lee

“To some it may seem old-fashioned to speak of virtue and chastity, honesty, morality, faith, character, but these are the qualities which have built great men and women and point the way by which one may find happiness in the living of today and eternal joy in the world to come. These are the qualities which are the anchors to our lives, in spite of the trials, the tragedies, the pestilences, and the cruelties of war which bring in their wake appalling destruction, hunger, and bloodshed.” - Harold B. Lee

“If it were not for the assurance that I have that the Lord is near to us, guiding, directing, the burden would be almost beyond my strength, but because I know that He is there, and that He can be appealed to, and if we have ears to hear attuned to Him, we will never be left alone.” - Harold B. Lee

“The trouble with us today, there are too many of us who put question marks instead of periods after what the Lord says. I want you to think about that. We shouldn't be concerned about why He said something, or whether or not it can be made so. Just trust the Lord. We don't try to find the answers or explanations. We shouldn't try to spend time explaining what the Lord didn't see fit to explain. We spend useless time.” - Harold B. Lee

“We must endure to the end; . . . We must so live as to acquire the attributes of godliness and become the kind of people who can enjoy the glory and wonders of the celestial kingdom.” - Joseph Fielding Smith

“There is one thing which we should have exceedingly clear in our minds. Neither the President of the Church, nor the First Presidency, nor the united voice of the First Presidency and the Twelve will ever lead the Saints astray or send forth counsel to the world that is contrary to the mind and will of the Lord.” - Joseph Fielding Smith

“There is one thing which we should have exceedingly clear in our minds. Neither the President of the Church, nor the First Presidency, nor the united voice of the First Presidency and the Twelve will ever lead the Saints astray or send forth counsel to the world that is contrary to the mind and will of the Lord.”-  Joseph Fielding Smith

“No other success can compensate for failure in the home.” - David O. Mckay

“Motherhood is the greatest potential influence either for good or ill in human life. The mother's image is the first that stamps itself on the unwritten page of the young child's mind. It is her caress that first awakens a sense of security; her kiss, the first realization of affection; her sympathy and tenderness, the first assurance that there is love in the world.” - David O. Mckay

“Children are more influenced by sermons you act than by sermons you preach.” - David O. Mckay

“It is glorious when you can lie down at night with a clear conscience that you have done your best not to offend anyone and have injured no one. You have tried to cleanse your heart of all unrighteousness, and if you put forth precious effort you can sense as you pray to God to keep you that night that He accepts your effort. You have a sense that you are God's child, a person whose soul God wants to save. You have the strength to resist evil. You also have the realization that you have made the world better for having been in it. These and countless other virtues and conditions are all wrapped up in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” - David O. Mckay

"None of us are secure except we keep the commandments of our Heavenly Father. The pathway of righteousness is the highway of happiness. There is no other way to happiness." - George Albert Smith

“If there is any one thing that will bring peace and contentment into the human heart, and into the family, it is to live within our means. And if there is any one thing that is grinding and discouraging and disheartening, it is to have debts and obligations that one cannot meet.” - Heber J Grant

“One of the main purposes of our existence is that we might conform to the image and likeness of Him who sojourned in the flesh without blemish—immaculate, pure and spotless! Christ came not only to atone for the sins of the world, but to set an example before all men and to establish the standard of God's perfection, of God's law, and of obedience to the Father.” - Joseph F. Smith

"Marriage is the preserver of the human race. Without it, the purposes of God would be frustrated; virtue would be destroyed to give place to vice and corruption, and the earth would be void and empty." - Joseph F. Smith

“When you find yourselves a little gloomy, look around you and find somebody that is in a worse plight than yourself; go to him and find out what the trouble is, then try to remove it with the wisdom which the Lord bestows upon you; and the first thing you know, your gloom is gone, you feel light, the Spirit of the Lord is upon you, and everything seems illuminated.” - Lorenzo Snow

"You may have the administration of angels, you may see many miracles; . . . but I claim that the gift of the Holy Ghost is the greatest gift that can be bestowed upon man." - Wilford Woodruff

“I would rather trust in the living God than in any other power on earth.” - John Taylor

“The earth, as a part of the creation of God, has fulfilled and will fulfil the measure of its creation. It has been baptized by water, it will be baptized by fire; it will be purified and become celestial, and be a fit place for celestial bodies to inhabit. ”-  John Taylor

“The difference between God and the Devil, is that God creates and organizes, while the whole study of the Devil is to destroy." - Brigham Young

“[God] never will institute an ordinance or give a commandment to His people that is not calculated in its nature to promote that happiness which He has designed, and which will not end in the greatest amount of good and glory to those who become the recipients of His law and ordinances." - Joseph Smith

“We came to this earth that we might have a body and present it pure before God in the celestial kingdom. The great principle of happiness consists in having a body. The devil has no body, and herein is his punishment. He is pleased when he can obtain the tabernacle of man. . . . All beings who have bodies have power over those who have not.” - Joseph Smith

Recognizing God's Hand in Our Daily Blessings

"Asking God for our daily bread rather than our weekly, monthly, or yearly bread is also a way for us to focus on the smaller, more manageable bits of a problem. To deal with something big, we may need to work at it in small, daily bites. Sometimes all we can handle is one day—or even just part of one day—at a time"  - Elder D. Todd Christofferson

I am His Daughter

I just came across this video a friend had posted on facebook and was touched by it. There are so many people in the world, especially women who have lost their identity, they don't know of their worth or their purpose. The media tells you how you must look and act to get noticed, but that kind of attention wont bring you happiness. There are so many who are confused and don't know that in truth they belong to a King, a Heavenly Father who they mean the world to. If we truly realized, and remembered that fact, how could we not rejoice? I say this now, because I at times forget who I am and how so very significant I am to my Father in Heaven. We are all significant. We all have a purpose. We all are loved and remembered. We are constantly being watched over by a loving Father that will let us choose our path so we may learn but so desires us to return to him. He would never want us to forget that we belong, and we matter.

There is something refreshing about attending the Temple. I don't do it often enough and I think that's my problem. There is inspiration and peace felt there that can't be found anywhere else, and how easily I forget that. I have just graduated from college after being in school pretty much my whole life. I have a lot of time on my hands right now as I wait for my license. When I don't have something to focus on or keep me busy it makes me worry, but perhaps it is a good thing for me to take a break from the fast paced world around me and think about where I go now in this new chapter of my life. I have always looked ahead, into my future and what I expect to happen, but I hardly enjoy the moment and where I am right now. I need take each day for all of its worth and be happy about where I am because after all its not only about the destination but the journey that takes us there. You can't just say "When this [event] happens, then I will be happy" because chances are when you get there you will only be looking towards the next thing. Wherever I go and wherever I end up, there will always be one constant, the Gospel, but only if I make it my top priority. All that I have been blessed with and everything I have overcome is in credit to my Heavenly Father, who wouldn't let me give up but gave me the strength to get through it. People say you find yourself nearer to God when in distress, because that is when you need him, but I want to be near to him in my happiest moment too.

There is something refreshing about attending the temple, you come out with a clearer view of who you are and what is most important.

"Just Stop It"

Last weekend I had the opportunity to watch General Conference. There are always good messages and advice given from the Lords messengers. I love all of the apostles but may have a favorite. President Uchtdorf always has good stories that go with his messages, he says things so simply and matter of fact that there isn't room to question, just do. Instead of typing my notes on his message I'd like to share the whole thing.

Because we all depend on the mercy of God how can we deny to others any measure of the grace we so desperately desire for ourselves?

Tests of Faith

I am nearing the end of my final semester in Dental Hygiene and there have been plenty of hills to climb. We have all been preparing for boards the passed few months and today was my last clinical. So much weighs on our clinical boards and things have to be just right in order to pass. I had my local anesthesia board on Thursday and the night before I was freaking out, worrying, and feeling nervous and unsure. I thought about all that I have done to prepare for these exams. I thought about how much I have prayed to get through them and how many people were praying for me too. I was still anxious that it wouldn't work out. I remember that night praying and finally realizing that I had done all I could do and the rest was in the Lords hands. I have talked about believing in the Lord and trusting that he can help us. And once I realized that I needed to have complete trust in Him to help me, I was calm. The next day was long as I awaited my turn, but I wasn't anxious. I went through the process and was very nervous when I got into clinic but it worked out, I passed the test. I was very relieved and grateful but knew the stress wasn't over. I had my last clinical today and had prepared everything well and got all the details ready and perfect. I opened up my scriptures last night and read a highlighted verse: "...the Lord in his great and infinite goodness doth bless and prosper those who put their trust in him." Again there was the trust. So I went to sleep reassured and woke up this morning. My patient called me one hour prior to test time and said she she was sick and didn't think she should come in. That is the worst phone call to get on board day. I got off the phone and was in tears, I was mad and bitter, I couldn't believe it was happening. I texted my classmates to see what backup patients were available. I didn't get a definite response so I said a prayer, packed up my stuff and went to the school. I regained my composure and got the feeling that somehow it was going to work out. I walked into the classroom where the girls and their patients were waiting. There was one patient who had been seen on Friday that had been a back up for yesterday that no one used. I called him at 7:30 on a Sunday morning to ask him if he could come in. He agreed and was there by my check in time. His x-rays were already complete and he was accepted on my first submission. It was amazing. I still don't know if I passed the test but I know that a prayer had been answered. I think of this trial and what I am supposed to learn from it. After all you can do you must have the faith for the rest. I may always struggle with that principle but one day I hope to have perfect faith.

ABC's

I do not get an Ensign in the mail where I live and even though I can read it online I seldom do. That is a very sad thing! I have decided that I will post about the First Presidency Message each month so that I make sure and read them, and then hopefully remember what I learned by writing it down. This month the article was by our prophet Thomas S. Monson called Living the Abundant Life. He taught about the ABC's of gaining the abundant life.

A stands for Attitude
and having a positive one. He quoted William James by saying, “The greatest revolution of our generation is the discovery that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.” He then said "So much in life depends on our attitude. The way we choose to see things and respond to others makes all the difference. To do the best we can and then to choose to be happy about our circumstances, whatever they may be, can bring peace and contentment... We can’t direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails. For maximum happiness, peace, and contentment, may we choose a positive attitude."

B stands for Believe
believe in yourself. "Be honest with yourself, with others, and with your Heavenly Father... Don’t limit yourself and don’t let others convince you that you are limited in what you can do. Believe in yourself and then live so as to reach your possibilities. You can achieve what you believe you can. Trust and believe and have faith."

C is for Courage
Face challenges with courage. "Courage becomes a worthwhile and meaningful virtue when it is regarded not so much as a willingness to die manfully but as a determination to live decently...There will be times when you will be frightened and discouraged. You may feel that you are defeated. The odds of obtaining victory may appear overwhelming. At times you may feel like David trying to fight Goliath. But remember—David did win! Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, “I’ll try again tomorrow.”

Pure and Simple Faith

This year for relief society our theme and focus is coming closer to Christ by learning to be like Him. We were given a list of Christ-like attributes and told to focus on a new one each month until the end of the year. For January I chose Patience and Faith. I would like to talk about Faith. I have realized that I have always had a testimony of paying my tithing and that by doing so because it is what God has asked, I have been taken care of. I have found that my financial needs have truly been met because I was willing to give a part of what I have back to God. My faith has always been strong in that area. But what about all areas, do I have faith in God about everything in my life? I am in my last semester of Dental Hygiene school and I have been struggling, I often doubt my abilities and second guess whether I am where I am supposed to be. There is a lot of stress and pressure and responsibility that comes with this training and graduating from this school and it is difficult. I always pray to my Heavenly Father and tell him that I trust in Him and His will and that I want to do what He see's best for me. But looking at it now, do I really have faith that I can get through this time in my life? I say I trust Him but is my faith complete? And then I answer myself. If I am constantly doubting, then no, I don't have faith, I don't completely believe He can help me succeed. Which is why this attribute was a good place to start. I came across this video about having pure and simple faith. We don't have to make things complicated, all we need is to ask, believing that he can help, and then do something about it.

"Whatever problems we encounter, there is always a way that it will be solved as long as we put our trust in God and trust in His power. If we exercise faith in ALL that we do he will provide a way to accomplish it."
